Solar panel myths: what is actually true?

Common solar claims often turn a nuanced engineering or financial question into a yes/no slogan. The useful approach is to separate what PV can do from what depends on the property, system design, tariff and user behaviour.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Common solar claims often turn a nuanced engineering or financial question into a yes/no slogan. The useful approach is to separate what PV can do from what depends on the property, system design, tariff and user behaviour.

Answer reviewed: September 2026UK-focused guidanceProperty-specific design still matters

“Solar only works when it is sunny”

False. PV works from daylight and can generate on cloudy days, although output varies with irradiance.

“Solar works normally in a blackout”

Usually false for a standard grid-connected system. Backup requires equipment specifically designed for that function.

“Every south-facing roof is suitable”

False. Roof condition, shading, usable area, structure, access and electrical considerations still matter.

“A battery always saves more money”

Not necessarily. Storage changes when electricity can be used, but economics depend on battery cost, tariffs, losses, cycling and how much surplus is actually available.

HOW WE HANDLE THE DETAIL

HEY Solar keeps technical and financial claims tied to the assumptions that make them true. Guidance is reviewed against authoritative UK sources and property-specific decisions belong in a survey and design.
