How much do solar panels cost in the UK?

A useful solar quote is built around your property, not a headline package price. Here are the factors that move the number.

How much do solar panels cost in the UK?
THE SHORT ANSWER

There is no single meaningful UK solar-panel price because the installed cost changes with system size, roof/access requirements, electrical work, equipment choice and whether battery storage is included. Compare like-for-like system specifications and assumptions rather than headline package prices.

System size

More panels and higher inverter capacity usually increase equipment cost, while larger systems can change the cost per installed kW.

Roof & access

Roof material, height, pitch, scaffolding, access constraints and remedial work can materially affect installation cost.

Battery choice

Adding battery storage changes both upfront cost and how energy can be used. Capacity, power output, chemistry, warranty and controls matter.

Electrical work

Consumer-unit changes, cable routes, earthing, metering and network requirements can add work that is not visible from a simple online estimate.

WHAT TO CHECK

Use this checklist before you compare proposals.

  • Installed system size in kWp
  • Number and rating of panels
  • Inverter and monitoring specification
  • Scaffolding/access included
  • Electrical upgrades included
  • Battery capacity and power if applicable
  • Warranty and aftercare
QUESTIONS THAT MATTER

Why can two quotes differ so much?

They may describe different system sizes, equipment, roof works, electrical work, warranties or battery specifications. Compare the scope line by line.

Should I choose the cheapest quote?

Price matters, but so do design assumptions, equipment, installation scope, certification, warranties and the credibility of projected savings.

What about VAT?

Current GOV.UK guidance says qualifying installations of energy-saving materials, including solar panels and electrical storage batteries, can receive temporary zero-rate VAT treatment. Eligibility and timing matter, so check the current official guidance and your installer’s treatment.

NEXT STEP

Turn research into a property-specific conversation.

Online information can narrow the options. A useful quotation needs the real property, energy use and project requirements.
