Should I get a battery with solar panels?

A battery can increase the amount of solar electricity you use yourself by storing surplus for later, but it adds cost and should be sized around your consumption, generation, tariff and goals.

THE SHORT ANSWER

A battery can increase the amount of solar electricity you use yourself by storing surplus for later, but it adds cost and should be sized around your consumption, generation, tariff and goals.

Answer reviewed: September 2026UK-focused guidanceProperty-specific design still matters

What a battery changes

Without storage, surplus generation is exported. With storage, some surplus can be shifted into evening or other periods when the property would otherwise import electricity.

Bigger is not always better

An oversized battery may spend long periods partly empty or underused. Capacity, usable depth, power rating and cycling all matter.

Export has value too

Stored electricity is not automatically worth more than exported electricity. Compare your import tariff, export tariff, losses and battery cost.

Tariffs broaden the use case

Some systems charge from the grid at cheaper times as well as storing solar. That can change the economics and control strategy.

HOW WE HANDLE THE DETAIL

HEY Solar keeps technical and financial claims tied to the assumptions that make them true. Guidance is reviewed against authoritative UK sources and property-specific decisions belong in a survey and design.
